Biographical Information

Dr. Larry Hughes is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Dr. Hughes leads the Department’s Energy Research Group, which examines energy and environmental concerns that pertain to Atlantic Canada. He has many years of experience in research and publications on energy security and climate change.

Some of his recent activities include:

• A lead authors of the Global Energy Assessment Knowledgement 5 on Energy Security (2009 to present)
• Member of Halifax Chamber of Commerce energy security committee (2005 to 2009)
• Member of Halifax Regional Municipality’s Regional Planning Committee (2002 to 2004)
• Head of the region’s commuter rail subcommittee (1999-2000)
• Intervener in NSPI rate increase hearings (2004, 2005, and 2008)
• Head of the Nova Scotia Wind Energy Project, a Climate Change Action Fund sponsored project designed to raise awareness of wind energy in Nova Scotia (1999 to 2008)
• Implemented a “bus route finder” for Metro Transit, sponsored by Transport Canada (2003-2004)

In addition to the above, Dr. Hughes has given numerous talks to community groups in Nova Scotia.

Between 2002 and 2005, he issued annual, independent reviews of Nova Scotia’s energy strategy. He is also a frequent contributor to various media outlets in Canada including the Globe and Mail and the Chronicle Herald. He has been interviewed on both television (CBC, CTV, and ATV), CBC radio (Information Morning, Maritime Noon, Mainstreet, and The Current), and local talk radio.

In addition to his research into energy and the environment, Dr. Hughes is also active in the design of innovative communication systems. He has a cross appointment with the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University and is an Honourary Research Associate in the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of New Brunswick.

His PhD in Computing Science is from the Computing Laboratory of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
